Microsoft Excel for Spanish Speakers

Need to learn how to create a worksheet and perform calculations? These classes are for you. The York College Community Jam Session

Established in 2006, the York College Community Jam Session is a chance for musicians to come together and strut their stuff! All instruments are welcome and the event is open to anyone in the greater York College community, including students, faculty, staff, members of the community, and beyond. Copies of The Real Book Vol. 1 will be provided in addition to a weighted keyboard, bass amp, and a newly purchased drum set! Lovers Rock, often dubbed 'romantic reggae' is a uniquely black British sound that developed in the late 70s and 80s against a backdrop of riots, racial tension and sound systems. Live performance, comedy sketches, dance, interviews and archive shed light on the music and the generation that embraced it. Lovers Rock allowed young people to experience intimacy and healing through dance- known as 'scrubbing'- at parties and clubs. This dance provided a coping mechanism for what was happening on the streets. Lovers Rock developed into a successful sound with national UK hits and was influential to British bands (Police, Culture Club, UB40) These influences underline the impact the music was making in bridging the multi-cultural gap that polarized the times. The film sheds light on a forgotten period of British music, social and political history.

The King of Kings Foundation, Inc. has officially kicked off their "Anti-Drug-Anti-Gang Warriors Tour" in schools, libraries, community centers and recreation centers educating all to the dangers and consequences of being involved with drugs, guns, gang violence, succumbing to peer-pressure and the lack of education -- which can all lead to homelessness, poverty and incarceration. Young Adult Internship Program (YAIP)

The Young Adult Internship Program (YAIP) is an internship program for low-income New York City youth ages 16 to 24. The program begins with a two- to four-week orientation followed by a 12-week paid internship. Once interns have completed their internship, YAIP offers nine months of follow-up services to help participants find a permanent job or a vocational/educational program.  The deadline to apply is March 26, 2012, and program space is limited. Empower Your Voice: Join YouthAction NYC
 
The YouthAction Community Leadership Course (YCLC) empowers young people as advocates to make New York City a better place for children, youth, and families. Take this course if you want to: meet and work with high school students from across New York City; immerse yourself in city government and learn how NYC delivers services to children and families; take part in street polling, interviews with elected officials and influential community leaders, and visit key community-based organizations throughout NYC; and present youth-generated policy recommendations to community leaders. You’ll be eligible to earn community service credit for your active participation. The course runs for ten sessions this spring, from March 5th - May 14th: Mondays, 4 - 7 pm. The application for a Capital Funding Request for Cultural Organizations for Fiscal Year 2013 is now available. The deadline if you are applying to the Borough President is February 28, 2012. This exhibit marks the culmination of JCAL’s 2011 Studio LLC, a yearlong program that offered practical and theoretical tools for emerging artists. The exhibit features artists who participated. Shape Up New York is a free fitness program for all ages and is looking for additional instructors at Detective Keith L. Volunteer opportunities are available for a variety of classes and activities, including aerobics, yoga and pilates. Volunteers must have some experience as a fitness instructor, and once accepted, will have the opportunity to shadow a current instructor before leading their own classes. This position offers flexibility and creativity for enthusiastic volunteers interested in giving back to their communities and addressing pressing health issues such as Diabetes and Obesity. Sanitation Registering Emergency Snow Laborers Ahead of Coming Snow Season

Sanitation Commissioner John J. Doherty today announced that the Department of Sanitation is now registering emergency snow laborers who can be called upon to remove snow and ice citywide from bus stops, crosswalks, and from step streets in sections of the City after heavy snowfalls.  Step streets are sets of stairwells located between avenues to connect streets that have a significant height differential.  The rate of pay begins at $12 per hour and increases to $18 per hour, after completing the first 40 hours, each pay week. Interested individuals can register at any DSNY garage between the hours of 7 AM to 3 PM, Monday through Friday. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, be eligible to work in the United States, and be capable of performing heavy physical labor.  All applicants must bring their social security card and a photo copy of it; two (2) small photos (1 1/2” square) and two (2) original documents and photo copies that prove identity and employment eligibility, such as a driver’s license; federal, state or local identification; school identification with photo, or passport, at time of registration.
